2008 February 14, 21 and 28 from 11 am to 1 pm- room A4
Outline:
This seminar will mostly consist of lectures presenting economic analyses of marriage. Students will be asked to present as well (in French or English). The economics of marriage is a relatively new field pioneered by Gary Becker in 1973. A variety of theoretical models will be presented, including Demand and Supply models by Becker and Grossbard-Shechtman, and two-person models such as the bargaining theories of McElroy and Lundberg and Pollak and Chiappori’s collective model. Demand and supply models that include prices and quasi-wages will be emphasized. Applications will be presented in the following areas: labor supply, consumption, personal finance, marriage formation and divorce. Every step in the economic analysis of marriage has legal ramifications. We will also investigate the effects of divorce laws—including rules for division of property in case of divorce or separation—on divorce rates, marriage rates, and labor force participation.
